Reader's Block

I apologize for the lack of updates around these parts. The day job is rapidly approaching project go-live and free hours are hard to come by. Things should ease up a bit after this weekend.

At the same time, I would be lying if I said that all was right in the world of this Abominable Blogger. I seem to have hit a bit of a reader's block of sorts. After finishing the highly enjoyable White Knight, I've had a hard time getting into my next book. I've sampled several but I haven't been able to get past the first few chapters and into the meat of the text. I fear my normally miniscule attention span may be further reduced by the veritable plethora of activities consuming my life at the moment.

While I haven't done any heavy reading in the past week or so, I have been burning through some of Bill Willingham's excellent Fables trade paperbacks and several short stories. I've also been working on sekrit stuff in the background, mostly interviews and the like.So I'm not being a total waste of literary consumption. But as I have way to many books on my reading list, I should really get back to the pile sooner rather than later.

Any advice for getting out from under an avalanche of books?

  2. I'm having a similar problem. I have TONS of great books to read--or listen to--and review, and I'm just not doing it. Macmillan Audio very generously sent me a review copy of the audiobook for A WAY OF KINGS, and I'm not even a quarter of the way through yet. I've also got Tobias Buckell and Paolo Bacigalupi's Audible project THE ALCHEMIST AND THE EXECUTIONESS to review. I just haven't had the desire to read much lately.

  3. Short stories, of course. Or even shortier poems. I don't want to read anything big at the moment, but stories and even a novel in stories goes down well.

  4. I'm with these guys: short stories are a fine way to cleanse your literary palette when you don't have the appetite for the dreaded stack.

Mind you, there've been times I've been so overwhelmed by all the books To Be Read that I'd just filed the lot away and started afresh. You can always go back to them - the relief of being rid of that mass of obligation weighing you down might be just what you need, Yeti.

  5. I would say read a book without planning to review it. So read whatever you want, and don't worry about what you would write as you read it. Assuming you let the blog influence what you read, and think about the review as you read (like I do). If neither of those are true...this comment never happened :)

  6. My cure for readers block, just don't read for a week or so. Take a break. And then just grab the first book you see and read it. Don't over think it.
