Covering Covers: Behemoth - Scott Westerfeld

Over at io9, they've got an exclusive first look at the cover art of Behemoth. Behemoth is the follow up to Scott Westerfeld's excellent Steampunk YA novel, Leviathan which garnered fantastic reviews last year (my review) and more recently won the Locus award for best YA novel.
While this cover matches the newly debuted US paperback cover, I think this photorealism on this cover detracts from what made either of the original covers [below] great in the first place.
This new cover is particularly disappointing as art is such an integral part of this series. Keith Thompson's wonderful interior sketches bring the "dieselpunk" world of Leviathan into sharp focus. It's extremely impressive how well his art works with the book. So when I saw this obviously photoshopped oversaturated cover, I couldn't help but be severly underwhelmed.
I really hope this is only one of the covers and there is a stronger US or UK cover out there.
